Doc Watson

The Doc Watson Endowment for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University provides opportunities for Appalachian Music students to work with expert practitioners in the field, and it brings Appalachian musicians and scholars to our campus. Students are able to document, celebrate, and study the contributions of Appalachian musicians adding to a growing body of knowledge of the diverse musical traditions that intersect in Appalachia.

The Center for Appalachian Studies is a unit within Appalachian’s University College.  University College consists of the university’s integrated general education curriculum, academic support services, residential learning communities, interdisciplinary degree programs and co-curricular programming—all designed to support the work of students both inside and outside of the classroom.

 

 


Scholarships

Students in Wales

The Center for Appalachian Studies currently offers five scholarships. All of the scholarships below are to be submitted directly to the Center for Appalachian Studies. The scholarship are .pdf files that can be filled out on-line and printed. Your computer must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to open these files.

Cratis Williams Memorial Fellowship in Appalachian Studies (PDF 46K) (up to $4497) - graduate

GRADUATE SCHOOL AWARDS AVAILABLE
ALL DEADLINES: OCTOBER 15TH

Domer Research Award, $500
This award provides research supplies or supports research activities, including travel to a professional meeting related to the student's research.
Application Process:
1. A letter from the graduate student describing his/her research and how the funds will be used.
2. A letter of endorsement and/or nomination from a faculty member.
3. Both letters should arrive at the graduate School in the same envelope clearly labeled "Domer Award" on or before October 15th.
The recipient will be selected in late Fall and recognized at the Graduate Student Awards Reception in April.
Funds must be expended prior to the recipient's graduation.

Joyce V. Lawrence Award, $500
(in honor of the late Joyce V. Lawrence, Graduate Dean, 1980-1996)
To recognize an outstanding graduate student and support their professional development.
The recipient will be chosen in the Fall semester and recognized at the Graduate Student Awards Reception in April.
Applicant submits to the Graduate School, Attention: Susan Triplett (in an envelope clearly labeled "Joyce V. Lawrence") on or before October 15th.
1. A letter describing your plan for the application of this award to research/scholarly activity/professional development.  The workshop, institute, or conference brochure must be included if requesting award for professional development.
2. A letter of endorsement from your thesis or academic mentor or program director.  The letter must be submitted in a sealed envelope which has been signed across the seal by the author.

Ronald and Kathie Zigli Research Award, $500
This award provides research supplies or supports research activities, including travel to a professional meeting related to the student's research.
The recipient will be chosen in the Fall semester and recognized at the Graduate Student Awards Reception in April.
Funds must be expended prior to the recipient's graduation.
Application process:
1. A letter from the graduate student describing his/her research project, and outlining in detail how the funds will be used.
2. A letter of nomination and/or endorsement from a faculty member.
3. Both letters should arrive in the Graduate School in the same envelope clearly labeled "Zigli Award" on or before October 15th.

FELLOWSHIP AVAILABLE:

The James Still Fellowship for Graduate Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Kentucky   http://www.research.uky.edu/gs/fellowship/fellopps.html



This fellowship opportunity is available for students applying to the University of Kentucky for graduate study in the humanities and social sciences.  The applicant must have graduated from a high school in the Appalachian region. The fellowship stipend is $15,000 and renewable for an additional year of study. It also provides a tuition scholarship and health insurance.  Nominees must have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.2 or above.
