Applying to the Department of Art is easy, but you must provide all of the specific materials requested and adhere to application deadlines. If you are an entering college freshman, you must first indicate ART as your major on the University application. Once formal acceptance is received from the University, all incoming freshmen and other new/TRANSFER students applying for admission into the Department of Art are required to submit a digital portfolio of 10 pieces of your most recent and accomplished work that will be held in your application file and used for reference during FOUNDATIONS PORTFOLIO REVIEW. This documentation may include any original visual artwork you have produced in high school, private or recreational classes, and/or on your own without instruction. Your application must be received by the last Wednesday in October and March, or the first Wednesday in July. You should apply to the Art Department one semester before you plan to attend Appalachian State University.
Students who are not admitted into the Department of Art after the Foundations Portfolio Review may enroll in Art Design FUNDAMENTALS COURSES to further develop artistic knowledge and skill. All students have an opportunity to reapply for admission into the Department of Art by resubmitting a portfolio and including artworks created in Art Fundamental courses during the next Foundations Portfolio Review. If you are accepted into the department with artworks created in Art Fundamentals, you may be eligible to receive credit for one or more Art Foundations courses. More information can be found under TRANSFER REVIEW.
