The Foundation Year is a coordinated experience designed to provide students with the methods of artistic research and practice that will allow them to translate their experiences and knowledge into artwork.  The Foundations Program promotes creativity and fosters a greater understanding of formal and conceptual concepts within the contemporary and historical framework. Craftsmanship, technical competence, and technological advances are introduced as students develop their ability to manipulate and organize ideas to communicate, solve problems and express themselves through visual language.

ART 1001 Foundations I, Two Dimensional Design
Students of this course have a proven aptitude for the visual arts and/or understanding of the fundamentals for competent design. This course includes a review of the elements and principals of 2-D design and will then concentrate on the conceptual application of design principals as they apply both to traditional and contemporary 2-D image-making.

ART 1002 Foundations II, Three Dimensional Design
This course introduces students to the structural elements used in making three-dimensional forms, emphasizing critical thinking, concept development and material manipulation in a studio experience.  Emphasis will be placed on the understanding of sculptural space (the relationship between form, space, materials and process) and the three-dimensional vocabulary used in the production of art.

ART 1003 Foundations III, Drawing
This course is extensive in the development of observational skills, of seeing and interpreting form. This course includes an orientation to traditional and non-traditional drawing tools, materials and media.
