Scholarships are available in three categories: University-wide Scholarships , College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships , and Departmental Scholarships. The Department of Biology offers the following scholarships for qualified students:

NOTE: Scholarships are funded from investment earnings of the ASU Foundation. The specific scholarships available during a given academic year are dependent on the economic conditions at the time.
2010 application deadline is March 10, 2010.
All scholarships require that the recipients must maintain or have a predicted GPA of 3.0 and be full-time students.
- The Appalachian Optometry Endowed Scholarship
Established by Appalachian Optometrists and friends interested in assisting the pre-professional program at the University. Qualifications: Undergraduate seniors preparing for a career in Optometry.
- Biology Alumni and Faculty Emeriti Endowed Scholarship
Established by alumni and faculty, this scholarship provides $800 annually for up to four years with preference given to entering students. Qualifications: Students must be biology majors.
- F. Ray Derrick Scholarship
Established by Carolyn Hampton, former student, in honor of F. Ray Derrick, the award provides scholarships for qualified biology majors. Qualifications: Applicants should be residents of North Carolina and need financial assistance.
- Lloyd L. Hobbs Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Ella T. Hobbs, and the Appalachian State University Foundation, Inc. in honor of her husband, the award provides two scholarships each year for need-based students who are juniors or seniors in the physical sciences.
- Mitchell D. Hoyl/Paul A. Patacchioloa Scholarship in Biology
Qualifications: Applicants who are either a graduate of an accredited high school, entering college for the first time, and accepted for admission to ASU, or current undergraduate or graduate students at the University; must be majoring in Biology with a specialization in Ecology and Environmental Biology or Teaching. Applicants must show proof of their North Carolina ancestry: progenitor established in North Carolina no later than 1860.
- William E. Hubbard Memorial Scholarship
Established in honor of Dr. William Hubbard, a former faculty member, the Hubbard scholarship provides one yearly award of $300-500 for an upper-level student who intends to enter a health profession. Qualifications: Junior or Senior biology major with high GPA's and intention of entering one of the health professions after graduation.
- Ida Belle Ledbetter Scholarship
Established by Ms. Ida Belle Ledbetter, former faculty member, the Ledbetter Scholarship provides scholarships ($200-500) for qualified biology majors. Qualifications: Biology majors with preference to students from Northwestern North Carolina and to students who are contributing financially toward their own education.
