HIS 3536/3531 - Issues in Teaching History

Dr. Pennell and Dr. Johnson teach two courses designed especially for history majors who plan to teach at the secondary level. The first course is HIS 3536 - Issues in Teaching U. S. History (counts as a U. S. history on the checksheet), which will be offered in Fall 2005. The second is Issues in Teaching World History (can count as a European or as a non-Western on the checksheet), which will be offered in Spring 2006.
In these courses, pre-service teachers prepare for the two history courses they will be required to teach at the high school level. The beginning activity in each course is identification of the required content and design of a plan to sequence and pace instruction. The primary activity will be the study, development, and organization of content necessary for lesson preparation and delivery. The course will conclude with location and examination of teaching materials other than textbooks. If you plan to teach, these courses are for you.

The Department of History is working with the College of Education to develop a "professional semester" for secondary education majors like the elementary education and middle grades education majors already have. The plan is to schedule the Issues in Teaching History courses back-to-back with CI 3100 and RE 4630 so that majors may have blocks of time to complete required internship hours in the public schools. BS-Teaching History majors are recommended to take both Issues courses. The recommendation is that one of those be taken with CI 3100 and RE 4630 in the semester preceding student teaching. The other Issues course can be taken earlier.
