"December 22 - somewhere in Virginia
My Dear Joseph,
Your letter of the thirteenth reached me yesterday, refreshing more than you know the
bruised and battered feelings of this old soldier. The past few weeks have been the most difficult of times for
me, for notwithstanding my belief that I am here for all of the right reasons I am, at times, simply overwhelmed
by a sense of futility and despair. We have talked many times, good brother, of the importance of making this world
a better place than we found it, of contributing those special measures of ourselves to the higher cause of
humanity, but I must tell you that in times like these it is hard - so very hard - to find merit of any kind in my
labors. Still, I must go on. I shall think of you and the family this Christmas, believing with all of my heart that
I shall soon be with you."
