Meeting Minutes
September
13, 2005
Introduction
of Andy Hill, our graduate assistant and secretary keeping the
minutes for the GETF.
There was a
reminder for members to keep Tuesday mornings clear next
semester.
The
possibility of bringing in external speakers was discussed.
The Grants
subcommittee reported. Dave Haney suggested that we should work
with community colleges. As we gather information from faculty,
information needs to go the other way to sending institutions.
Joni
Petschauer discussed the development of regular feedback
meetings on campus beginning Sept. 23. It was suggested that
Sept 23 might be too soon to plan. The date of Oct. 28 was
fixed for the first forum. A special appeal should be made to
chairs to ask their faculty to attend. A note will be put on
the GETF website about the forum.
There was a
suggestion to change web site address to something simpler like
gened.appstate. edu. We will ask John Whitehead, our webmaster.
There was an
update on the focus group research planned this month. A memo is
going out to introduce the focus group research to all deans and
chairs. Our graduate assistant is calling the sample of
students and faculty to try to boost enrollment in the groups.
Students have not been signing up for focus groups and special
efforts will be made to increase our sample here. Perhaps
personal appeals by the task force members might help. We may
have to supplement with a convenience sample. Moderators and
note takers for the focus groups will be assigned this week.
The final version of the protocol for the focus group research
was distributed. Please note the addition of protection of
confidentiality and use of code numbers rather than names.
There was some discussion of the equipment needs of the focus
groups (recorders, etc.).
It was
announced that during the rest of September, the GETF will only
meet as a body on Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 for focus group
debriefings. Otherwise, members will be busy running the focus
groups during the last two weeks of the month.
Discussion
about planning for meetings in Oct/Nov. ensued. These meetings
will be for gathering information about what is currently done
on campus: what we do well and where improvement can be made.
Suggestions for invitations for presentations included:
assessment, student development (co-curricular ideas), writing
across the curriculum, sustainable development, international
programs, academic advisors, information literacy, learning
communities/first year experience, and service learning. It
will be important to talk about resource implications with each
unit.
The
suggestion was made to set up reading groups twice a month on
Friday, open to all, to discuss general education issues.
Perhaps put readings on reserve at library.
Could we ask
for information from the Career Center about employers and what
traits they look for in hiring? Could we contact alums at
Homecoming?
Joni
Petschauer announced that the General Education Institute
subcommittee would meet here next Tuesday, 8:30am.
