Meeting Minutes
September
23, 2005
We will hear
about focus groups later in the meeting. First, some
announcements were made.
A GETF link
is now on the ASU homepage.
A handout was
given out with an outline of the meetings to come. These will
be informational meetings with presenters asked to tell us what
works and what doesn’t. We have asked presenters for
recommendations. We should think of these meetings as having
the goal of producing recommendations for our final report.
Presentations have been added on student development,
information literacy, service learning and internships.
There will be
two general education forums this semester on Oct. 28 and Nov.
11. These will be outreach efforts to inform the campus of our
work and to hear from members of the campus community.
It is stated
that we can ask for money to bring in a speaker from off campus;
if anyone has suggestions. Ann Viles volunteered to work on the
idea of bringing in a speaker.
Chair states
that our final report will consist of a list of recommendations
to improve general education, a set of principles that provide
the foundation for our general education, and a model
summarizing the organization of the core. We will work on this
through spring semester and possibly beyond. Following the
adoption of a model, the curriculum will be addressed.
There is a
proposal that we replace the grants subcommittee with two
subcommittees focused on: (1) community colleges and high
schools and (2) alumni/employers.
We will be
gathering information in these areas and doing public
relations. We want to engage these institutions, to hear from
them, and to let know we are interested in what they have to
say.
Volunteers to
serve on the Community colleges/high schools subcommittee: Joni
Petschauer (Chair), Jeni Wyatt, Alexandra Hellenbrand, Ray
Williams. Volunteers for the Alumni/Employers subcommittee:
Dave Haney (tentative Chair), Greg Rhoads, David Humphrey, Paul
Gates, and Dan Friedman.
Dan sent
around information from the Chronicle of Higher Education that
summarizes information from AAC&U on student attitudes toward
liberal education.
Focus group
reports were given by moderators/note takers for 3 groups
conducted this week. These reports will be transcribed and
posted later.
