Greater Expectations in General Education Speaker

The President of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, Dr. Carol Geary Schneider, will be speaking on the campus of Appalachian State University on February 16. She will also be working with the General Education Task Force and Office of Student Development.

AAC&U is the leading national association concerned with the quality of undergraduate liberal education. It represents over 1000 accredited colleges and universities, including institutions both large and small, public and private, two-year and four-year. In 2000, the organization launched the Greater Expectations Initiative focused on systematic educational and curricular change, making it more responsive to today’s students and more engaged with society. The analysis is presented in the organization’s 2002 report Greater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes to College.

Dr. Schneider has been president of the AAC&U since 1998. Under her leadership, the organization has expanded its work on diversity, launched new projects on civic engagement and the disciplines, and increased its support for campuses working on educational change.

Dr. Schneider is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Harvard University, where she earned her Ph.D. in early modern history. She has taught at Boston University, Chicago State University, The University of Chicago, and DePaul University. She has been a distinguished Visiting Scholar at The American University in Cairo, 1997, and a Getty Center Visiting Scholar for the Seminar on Public Culture in 1998.

The title of the public lecture is “Achieving Greater Expectations: From Promise to Practice in General Education.” It will be held in Rosen Hall, Broyhill Music Center, on Thursday, February 16, at 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend.
