Mr. Kevin Balling has taught in the Department since 1982. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Gardner Webb University and his Masters and Ed.S in Educational Media from Appalachian. Kevin presently teaches Video Production 1 and 11 and Television Studio Production. He has been producing independent video since 1983. "Voices From The Garden" chronicles the struggle of the Cree and Inuit of northern Quebec to stop hydroelectric development on their land. "Doc and Merle" is an inside look into the lives and music of Doc and Merle Watson. "Goodbye Mr. Chips" looks at the impact of a wood chip mill on a small Pennsylvania community. "While The Ages Roll On...A Memorial" is a documentary on the tradition and ritual of The Old Regular Baptists of central appalachia, and Strands" deals with peoples obsession with their hair. His most recent video is entitled "Benediction", an experimental piece shot entirely within a garden. All of his videos have been aired on Public Television and have been used in environmental campaigns internationally. Kevin has also collaborated with performance artist Catherine Altice on "All The Kings Men" a video/performance performed at the Weatherspoon Gallery in Greensboro, N.C. He has done freelance camera for regional CBS networks and ESPN. Kevin is currently in production on a documentary entitled "Rites of Eden" which deals with the movement to legalize industrial hemp as a cash crop.
Kevin is a two time recipient of a Southeast Media Fellowship, a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship, and has been funded by The Beldon Fund, The Benton Foundation, The Kaltenborn Foundation, Greenpeace, The Sierra Club, Berea College and Appalachian State University.
