Here you'll find answers to questions that are typically asked by students. Most of these questions relate to our department, but you'll find other common questions answered here as well. If you have a question you would like answered, and you think it's a question that others have as well, submit it! |
Q: What do I need to do to get an internship?
A: You can do an internship with any company, but if you want to get academic credit for it, you need to go through the department. An internship information booklet will be available in the communication departmental office, starting mid-fall 2000. Students should review this booklet. Dr. Janice Pope is currently departmental internship coordinator. For information beyond the booklet, or to discuss the process further, contact Dr. Pope at popejt@appstate.edu or by phone at 262-2391. Dr. Pope's office is 240 Walker Hall. You can also get more information on the Internship page.
Q: How do I forward my ASU mail to another email account?
A: If you use Hotmail or some other email account as your primary email address, and don't check your ASU email very often, you should set your ASU account to automatically forward all mail to your other account. This is really quite easy to do, but it is something you have to do manually (no easy webpage, unfortunately). Here are instructions on how to forward your mail courtesy of Academic Computing, or for more complete directions check out Dr. Wood's page. This is an very valuable thing to do, because this way you won't miss out on COMMAJ-L messages or other university announcements.
Q: What classes can be taken for the selected topics requirement for Applied and Advertising majors?
A: Special topics courses for Applied majors are usually numbered 3547 or 3548, for Advertising majors they are number 3549. However, quite often these courses are appropriate for multiple majors. In general, almost any special topics course (numbers 3530-3549) can be used for the requirement in the Applied and Advertising majors. However, you should check with your advisor to make sure that the course you plan to take is appropriate. In extreme cases, alternate courses (study abroad, internships, and other non-standard courses) can be substituted for the special topics requirement.
Q: How do I declare a minor in Communication?
A: The minor of 18 hours in Communication is selected in consultation with the Department Chairperson, Dr. Stuart Towns. A minor can be selected from any of the five subject areas of the department (advertising, applied com, broadcasting/electronic media, print journalism, public relations) or from one of two general minors: mass communication or general communication. See Dr. Towns in Walker Hall for details.
Q: What's the deal with the department computer lab (hours, availability, etc.)?
A: The department at present only has one lab, in Wey 214. This lab is primarily used for teaching courses. It is not available for general use between the hours of 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and not at all on weekends. However, budget and staff permitting, the lab is generally open for student use from 8 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Q: What labs have what programs available?
A: You can find out the place, content, and operation times of university computer labs by accessing the Students link on the ASU homepage and looking under Student Computing, where you will find a page with computer lab information.
Q: How can I make sure I graduate on time?
A: Many variables will affect this, including how often you change majors, and how motivated you are to take classes. But there are some basic things that you can do to increase you chances of finishing in 4 years (or less, even!).
Q: How do I apply for scholarships?
A: The appropriate forms are located in the department office, in Walker Hall. You can find more info about scholarships, including deadlines, on the scholarship page.
Q: How do I know who my advisor is?
Q: How can I change advisors?
Q: When is advising?
Q: How do I sign up for advising?
Q: How do I know which checksheet to use?
Q: Why do I need to see an advisor?
Q: What classes do teachers suggest I take before going into a particular course?
