Forensics Union
Forensics Union, often referred to as ASU's debate team, is a member of the national Pi Kappa Delta Forensics Fraternity. Active at Appalachian State University since , Forensics is purely academically driven. It seeks to educate students interested in developing debate and public speaking skills by placing them in competitive speaking and debate situations.
ASU Forensics Union consists of students from a wide variety of majors, including political science, psychology, and communication. Members travel 12 weeks per year competing in Southeast Region tournaments. Forensics also participates in two national tournaments, one yearly, the other every two years.
Appalachian State University is proud that its Forensics Union is currently ranked among the Top Ten in national rankings by the competitive point system. The team has won numerous intercollegiate tournaments, including the Southeast Region tournament and those hosted by Georgia College and Clemson.
Members can chose from 11 individual events. These events range from informative speeches to dramatic interpretives. Students are placed in three divisions for competition. Open Division includes students with two or more years experience. Junior Varsity (JV) includes students with one or two years experience. Students with no experience begin in the Novice Division.
ASU recognizes the value of a strong Forensics Union and offers several scholarships to its members. Anyone interested in public speaking is urged to join Forensics.
