Dr. Sharon Pennell, Assistant Professor, teaches journalism and speech classes in the department while also serving on the Board of Education in Caldwell County. She received both her bachelor of science degree in English and her master of arts degree in education from Appalachian. She earned her doctorate in education-professional specialization in communication from Walden University. She has had a number of works published at the local, state and national levels. In 1996, Dr. Pennell won a state award from the North Carolina Press Club for her editorial writing, and in 1992 she won the Lassiter First Amendment Award for openness in government from the North Carolina Press Association. She was 1992 "North Carolina Woman of the Year" and 1993 "Caldwell County Distinquished Woman of the Year." Dr. Pennell is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the North Carolina Press Association, the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the Carolinas Speech Association, the National Forensics League, the Business and Professional Women's Club, and the N.C. and National School Boards Association. She is also the departmental advisor for the SPJ chapter at Appalachian.
