Appalachian State University's Department of Communication received its charter for a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) in 1991. Since that time, ASU's PRSSA chapter has grown dramatically in shaping the professional lives of public relations students at ASU. The chapter's prime mission is to educate its members in the professional and ethical aspects of public relations and to provide professional contacts and mentorship through its parent organization, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

The chapter has approximately 30 student members each semester. Students participate in speaker meetings, social events, the mentor program, community service activities, and other various organizational functions. In addition to professional networking, students have the chance to work with Omni PR, the chapter's student-run public relations firm that serves other campus organizations.

Appalachian State's PRSSA is headed by an executive student council and aided by a faculty advisor. PRSSA's current faculty advisor is Dr. Janice Pope. PRSSA also works closely with its parent chapter, Tar Heel PRSA, in its mentor program which connects PRSA members to students in a mentoring relationship.

Appalachian State's PRSSA continues to reap the rewards of professional relationships in North Carolina and student relationships across the nation. The chapter strives to be among the top chapters in the Southeast through its fine professional programs and motivated students.
