Dr. Stuart Towns, Professor and Department Chairperson, teaches in the applied communication concentration. He received his undergraduate degree in speech from the University of Arkansas, his masters and Ph.D. in speech from the University of Florida. Prior to coming to ASU in July 2000, Dr. Towns taught at the University of West Florida, where he served as Professor, and at various times as an Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, and Chairperson of the Department of Communication Arts. He was also the men's cross country coach from 1986 to 2000. He has published two books in the field of southern rhetoric and public address, and is currently completing a book manuscript on the rhetoric of the civil rights movement in the South. He served a term as the executive secretary of the Southern States Communication Association and is a member of SSCA, the National Communication Association, and the Carolinas Communication Association. Dr. Towns is a retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel and served more than twenty years as a member of the Consulting Faculty Program at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
