Milgram's Baseline Procedure
1. Define obedience.
2. Give the procedue and results of the Milgram study in great detail.
3. Give at least three reasons that you believe that most 'teachers' administered all 450 volts.
4. What is the effect of the following variables on the likelihood that the teacher will administer 450 volts?
a. Nationality, is obedience to authority a distinctly American characteristic?
b. Status, in what way does the status of the experimenter influence the obedience. Give a 'real life' example of how status may have impacted obedience.
c. Personality, does the personality of the experimenter and/or victim influence obedience?
d. Social interaction, does 'closeness' teacher affect the degree of obedience?
5. Describe the ethical criticisms that were made of the Milgram study.
6. Describe Milgram's response to these criticisms.
7. How did most participants feel about their involvement in Milgram's study.
8. What was the result of the ethical criticisms of Milgram's study?
9. According to your instructor, was there a cost in imposing a more strict ethical code. What was that cost?
10. Milgram gives an example of obedience that leads to murder. Is unthinking obedience always negative? Give examples to support your answer.
11. What are the implications of Milgram's study for teachers? In other words, does Milgram's experiment tell us anything about the type of student that we should produce in schools?
