Textbook   Quests
Dear Pilgrim,
Textbook assignments determine what parts of the book students will read.  Unfortunately, assignments also delineate what students will not read.  For instance, requiring eight chapters in a fourteen-chapter text insures that six chapters will not be read by the great majority of students.  Textbook assignments box students into little cubicles, treating them all the same.  Stamp, stamp, stamp, go the students.  It is time to set students free, to make them active participants in their own definitions.  Welcome to questing, the part of our course where you can influence the path of your own growth.

Rules of the Quest

1) I will select the Questing chapter from the textbook.

2) On questing days (these dates are indicated in your syllabus), make arrangements to take a 20 item quiz on the chapter.

Will rewards await at the end of your quest?  For the true pilgrim, the knowledge and pleasure inherent in the quest is reward enough.  Sadly, few pilgrims are pure of heart.  Most unblossomed pilgrims need incentives to pull them through their journeys.  In recognition of the imperfections of this world, pilgrims will be rewarded according to the following formula:

Questing Points = (Number Correct - 10) * 2

For instance, a pilgrim obtaining 16 correct would receive 12 questing points.  Questing points are extra credit to be calculated with your grade at the end of the semester.  Should you attain 10 or fewer correct solutions, the dark shroud of ignorance will remain upon you.  You will receive nary a point.  Thankfully, mercy lies in the freshness of each new dawn.  Tomorrow's quest may see you escape your personal darkness into a light of your own creation.

What You Learn Is What You Are
