Task complexity and the rate that material is presented combine to determine instructional demands. It is important to note that instructional demands are characteristics of the task and not the student. Usually, stringent instructional demands are best when soldiers are high in ability and knowledge level. More lenient instructional demands often promote better learning with less ablesoldiers. Individualization referes to the ability of teachers or
teaching techniques to adapt to differences in students' abilities, skills,
and knowledge levels. Media vary greatly in the degree of individualization
that they offer. The inflexibility of traditional platform instruction
epitomizes the dilemma forced by instructional demands. Lecturers
can adopt stringent instructional demands, but the cost will be that most
of the students learn very little. Conversely, if the lecturer sets
lenient instructional demands, the most competent students will become
bored and not fulfill their potential. Other more flexible media,
like CBT and teleconferencing, let the students' skills and abilities determine
instructional demands.
