In our library
Start with our library
catalog. While material on art, social studies, and the
humanities is located at Belk Library, remember that material on music
is largely in the Music Library at the Broyhill Music Center. The
music library has a considerable number of world music CDs.
Unfortunately, you cannot check those out. If you would like to
let the class listen to a CD from the music library, let
me know. I can check it out for a limited time. I also
have a good number of CDs and I will be happy to lend those to
you. A catalog of my CD collection is available
online.
As you have undoubtedly already found out, our library
does not have enough resources to provide you with the depth and breadth
of information that you will need. However, you will need to conduct a
thorough search for additional sources in your area.
General Sources
For the general introduction, use good general sources
including:
 |
Encyclopedia Britannica (available as hardcopy
at the Reference section of Belk and online) |
 |
Encyclopedia
of the Third World |
 |
World Factbook (available in hardcopy
at the reference section of the library and online) |
 |
Other reference material such as the country studies
published by Scarecrow Press under the title Historical
Dictionary of... |
Country and Regional Sources
Africa
 |
An excellent catalog of material on Africa,
especially in the visual arts, is the Smithsonian
Institution Libraries Catalog. The library of the
National Museum of African Arts catalogs journal articles, book
chapters and much more. They cover many obscure journals and
hard-to-find items. |
 |
The library of the National Museum of African Arts
also provide a useful annotated guide titled Modern
African Art: a basic reading list |
 |
The Smithsonian also provide a list
of links to relevant sites arranged by countries and artists,
links to online exhibition and more. |
Asia
 |
The catalog of the Sackler and Freer Library of the
Smithsonian is available through Telnet.
While quite extensive in its coverage of Asian visual arts, it does
not emphasize modern art and catalog only books and periodicals, but
not articles. |
Music Sources
 |
The best place to get an overview on the current
research in world music is the Garland
Encyclopedia of World Music. It is a scholarly and current
survey on world music by country, music styles, major artists and
much more. Read the entry on your country first and then
decide on additional articles to read. |
 |
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is
available online and
in hardcopy
at the Music Library. It is very current,
but does not provide the depth of the Garland Encyclopedia.
The bibliographies on each entry are very useful. |
 |
Appalachian
Library Guide for Sources in Music gives you a list of databases and
other resources on music. There are two major databases
for music:
However, remember that information on world
music is not limited to music journals. Search general
humanities and social science databases as well.
|
Art Sources
 |
The Grove Dictionary of Art is available online
and in hardcopy
at the reference section of Belk. It provides Up-to-date
information but is not very comprehensive. |
 |
Appalachian
Library Guide for Sources in the Arts gives you a list of databases
and other sources on the visual arts.
 |
The main art database is Arts
Abstracts. Its focus is Western art, but it does have
a lot of useful sources |
You need to look at more general humanities and
social science databases including:
