In the 1990s works by an artist called Eddie Burrup achieved
some success as part of the Aboriginal art movement. Several works were
selected for exhibition open only to Aboriginal artists and even won
awards. A scandalous affair developed in 1997 when it was revealed that
these works were not that of an Aboriginal person, but that of an elderly
Anglo-Australian artist called Elizabeth Durack. The artist claimed that her
intimate familiarity with Aboriginal life entitles her to create art by her
'alter ego. Needless to say, this was not the perspective of Aboriginal
critics. Check
here for the full story. and here
for a very different perspective.
A site maintained
by the artist's daughter present the works and provide information on Eddie
Burrup with no mention of the hoax. The tone of the purported 'artist's
comments' is derogatory.
