The philosophy and implementation of procedures for the evaluation of communication disorders in children and adults with emphasis on obtaining and interpreting case history data, conducting diagnostic interviews, and administering, scoring and interpreting data from diagnostic instruments used to evaluate articulation/phonology, language, fluency, voice and motor speech disorders. Issues related to the assessment of communication disorders in diverse populations will be highlighted.
This course will be in seminar format. Each participant will contribute to the learning of the other participants through presentations, thoughtful discussions, and group activities. We will try to devote the greatest proportion of each class meeting to discussion and/or learning activities, with a limited amount of "lecture."
Each student will complete six sets of review questions (quizzes) from the assigned chapters. The quizzes are included in the WebCT interface. Each set of questions will be worth 25 points for a total of 150 points.
Two case studies will be discussed in class. Each student will develop a reflection paper in response to the cases presented. The content & form of the case studies are described on the Assignment page. Each case will be worth up to50 points.
Reports
Each student will submit an evaluation report for each of the two case studies discussed in class. The content, form, and evaluation critera for the reports are described on the Assignment page. Each report will be worth up to 25 points.
Individually or in groups of no more than three, students will be develop an assessment plan based on case history information provided. The content and form of the plan are described on the Assignment page. The plan will be worth up to 50 points.
In small groups, students will be responsible for presenting information on a specific assessment tool. Details on this requirement are included on the Assignment page. The presentation will be worth up to 50 points.
Students will demonstrate competence in administering and scoring several commonly used assessment tools. Details on this requirement are included on the Assignment page. The competencies will be worth up to a total of 100 points.
