COURSE DESCRIPTION
Overview of normal and age-, gender-, and culture-related
differences in adult communication and upper aerodigestive
function. Behavioral characteristics, neuropathology, and
etiologies of aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia
will be described, giving special consideration to the
impairments, activity limitations, and participation
restriction related to these disorders. (Meets ASHA
II-B).

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students completing the course will
- understand the anatomical and neurological support
system for communication and aerodigestive function
- identify characteristics of normal communication and
aerodigestive function with appreciation for diversity in
communicative and eating behaviors
- identify and characterize
- pathophysiology and impairments contributing to
communicative and swallowing disabilities,
- activity limitations in communication and
aerodigestive function, and
- participation restrictions resulting from
communication and swallowing disorders
- understand the impact of a variety of common
neurological disorders on communication and aerodigestive
function
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
General Expectations
According to the guidelines set forth by the
Communication Disorders Program, students should commit 10
hours per week for each 3 semester hour course. The
following are my expectations for the time commitments for
the course:
- class meetings: 2.5 hours per week
- reading: 1-3 hours per week
- studying and reviewing: 1-2 hours per week
- homework: 2-3 hours per week
Specific Requirements
- Exams. One
midterm (100 points) and a final exam
(200 points) will be
administered.
- Cheat Sheets. Students will develop cheat
sheets that summarize and integrate key concepts
discussed in the class. The purpose of the cheat
sheets is for quick reference in clinical settings and
for test review. The content and form of the cheat sheets
are described on the assignment
page. Each cheat sheets will be worth up to 50
points.
- Service Learning. Each student will
participate in a service learning project worth 50
points. The primary activity will be promoting Brain
Awareness Week, but other projects may also be completed
with the approval of the instructor. More details about
the service learning project are included on the
assignment page.
Extra Credit
Students may earn up to 20 extra points by completing
extra credit projects described on the extra
credit page.
