Spring 2004: Part II

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Overview of normal and age-, gender-, and culture-related differences in adult communication and upper aerodigestive function. Behavioral characteristics, neuropathology, and etiologies of aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia will be described, giving special consideration to the impairments, activity limitations, and participation restriction related to these disorders.

COURSE OUTCOMES FOR MODULE TWO:

Students completing the course will

  1. identify characteristics of normal communication function with appreciation for diversity in communicative and behaviors (ASHA III-C)
  2. identify and characterize  (ASHA III-D)
    1. pathophysiology and impairments contributing to motor speech disorders
    2. activity limitations in communication function related to neuromuscular impairment
    3. participation restrictions resulting from motor speech disorders
    4. personal and external factors influencing activity and participation outcomes
  3. demonstrate ability in selecting and utilizing clinical tools for the assessment of body structure and function, activity, and participation (ASHA III-E)
  4. demonstrate ability in identifying and implementing strategies for managing communication and impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions (ASHA III-E)
  5. demonstrate understanding of the role of the speech-language pathologist across health care settings including (ASHA III-F, G, H)
    1. participation in and facilitation of patient and family centered service provision teams
    2. health promotion and wellness
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of normal cultural and linguistic differences that may affect assessment and intervention in adult neurogenic patients (ASHA III-E)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

General Expectations

According to the guidelines set forth by the Communication Disorders Program, students should commit 10 hours per week for each 3 semester hour course. The following are my expectations for the time commitments for the course:

  • class meetings: 2.5 hours per week
  • reading: 1-3 hours per week
  • studying and reviewing: 1-2 hours per week
  • homework: 2-3 hours per week

Specific Requirements

  1. Portfolio. Each student will develop a portfolio of resources related to the management of swallowing disorders. Details. 100 points.
  2. Quizzes and Exams. One in-class quiz (50 points) will be administered (see course schedule below). The comprehensive take-home exam is worth 100 points.

Extra Credit

Students may earn up to 15 extra points by completing extra credit projects described on the extra credit page .
