Fall 2006

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Overview of normal and age-, gender-, and culture-related differences in adult communication and upper aerodigestive function. Behavioral characteristics, neuropathology, and etiologies of aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia will be described, giving special consideration to the impairments, activity limitations, and participation restriction related to these disorders.

Other materials

  • A CD-ROM and printed coursepack will be available for purchase through the LRE office.
  • A coursepack will be available for purchase at SOS Printing (next to Mellow Mushroom, across from the Annex). Additional information and/or materials will be posted on the class web site

COURSE OUTCOMES

Students completing CD 5731 will achieve the following outcomes:

  1. knowledge of basic human communication and aerodigestive functions, including their biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and cultural bases (ASHA IIIB)
  2. knowledge of the nature of adult neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders, including their etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and cultural correlates (ASHA IIIC)
  3. knowledge of standards of ethical conduct governing provision of services to individuals with neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders (ASHA IIIE)
  4. knowledge of processes used in research and the integration of research principles into evidence-based practice in the management of
  5. neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders (ASHA IIIF)
  6. knowledge of contemporary professional issues related to the management of
  7. neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders (ASHA IIIG)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

General Expectations

According to the guidelines set forth by the Communication Disorders Program, students should commit 10 hours per week for each 3 semester hour course. The following are my expectations for the time commitments for the course:

  • class meetings: 2.5 hours per week
  • reading, studying, and reviewing: 3 - 4 hours per week
  • homework: 3 - 4 hours per week

Specific Requirements

  1. Language Sample Project. Each student will elicit and analyze language samples from neurologically normal adults. Details. 25 points. (Outcome 1)
  2. Service Learning Project. Each student will participate in a service learning project. Details. 200 points. (Outcomes 1, 3, 4, & 5)
  3. Presentations. All students will contribute to the community of practice by presenting a content unit. Details. 50 points. (Outcome 2)
  4. Quizzes and Exams. Two in-class quizzes will be administered (see course schedule below). Each quiz will be worth 25 points. A comprehensive final exam (take-home) is worth 150 points. (Outcomes 1 - 5)

Extra Credit

Students may earn up to 20 extra points by completing extra credit projects described on the extra credit page .
