COURSE DESCRIPTION

 Differential diagnosis and management of the impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions related to aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia. Special consideration will be give to age-, gender-, and culture-related differences.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students completing the course will

  1. gain skill in selecting and utilizing clinical tools for the assessment of communication and aerodigestive function
  2. gain skill in identifying and implementing strategies for managing communication and swallowing impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions
  3. appreciate the role of the speech language pathologist across health care settings including 
    1. participation in and facilitation of patient and family centered service provision teams
  4. health promotion and wellness

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

General Expectations

According to the guidelines set forth by the Communication Disorders Program, students should commit 10 hours per week for each 3 semester hour course. Over the course of a typical semester (15 weeks), the total commitment for a 3 semester hour course is 150 hours. The modified schedule for this class will result in the following estimated workload:

  • May 20 - 30 
    • Class meetings: 3.5 hours per day (28 hours total)
    • Reading: 1-2 hours per day (10 hours total)
    • Homework & studying: 1-2 hours per day (10 hours total)
  • June 3-21 
    • Class meetings: 3.5 hours per week (10.5 hours total)
    • Reading: 2-5 hours per week (10 hours total)
    • Homework & studying: 4-7 hours per week (20 hours total)
  • Take home exam: 5 hours

Specific Requirements

  1. Exam. A comprehensive final exam will be administered. The exam will be "take-home" and be worth 100 points.
  2. Assessment Protocol. Students will develop a brief assessment protocol for screening and informal observations. The content and form of the assessment protocol are described on the assignment page. The protocol will be worth a total of 50 points.
  3. Assessment Case Presentation. Students will present to the class an assessment plan based on case history information. The content and form of the presentation are described on the assignment page.The presentation will be worth a total of 50 points.
  4. Treatment Guidesheets. Students will develop guide sheets summarizing treatment strategies for the various disorder areas.  The content and form of the guidesheets are described on the assignment page.The guide sheets will be worth a total of 50 points.
  5. Treatment Presentation. Students will present to the class a treatment plan based on case history information. The content and form of the presentation are described on the assignment page.The presentation will be worth a total of 50 points.
  6. Competencies. Students will demonstrate competence in the following skill areas:
  • Clinical swallowing examination, including oral motor exam
  • Observation and interpretation of videofluorographic swallow assessment
  • Two swallowing maneuvers (Mendelsohn and Supraglottic Swallow) 


    The competencies will be graded pass/fail. Details about the competencies are included on the assignment page. The competencies will be worth a total of 50 points.

Extra Credit

Students may earn up to 20 extra points by completing extra credit projects described on the extra credit page.
