COURSE DESCRIPTION
Differential diagnosis and management of the impairments, activity limitations,
and participation restrictions related to aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria,
and dysphagia. Special consideration will be give to age-, gender-, and
culture-related differences.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students completing the course will
- gain skill in selecting and utilizing clinical tools for the assessment
of communication and aerodigestive function
- gain skill in identifying and implementing strategies for managing
communication and swallowing impairments, activity limitations, and
participation restrictions
- appreciate the role of the speech language pathologist across health
care settings including
- participation in and facilitation of patient and family centered
service provision teams
- health promotion and wellness
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
General Expectations
According to the guidelines set forth by the Communication Disorders Program,
students should commit 10 hours per week for each 3 semester hour course.
In this course, the following guidelines for workload are recommended:
- class meetings: 2.5 hrs per week
- reading: 2 - 3hrs per week
- studying and homework: 3 - 4hrs per week
- service learning project: 20 hrs total
Specific Requirements
- Exams. A comprehensive final exam will be administered. The
exam will be worth 100 points.
- Service Learning Project. Students will participate in a service
learning project related to the course content. Details about the nature
of scope of this project are included on the assignment
page. Participation in this project will be worth 50 points.
- Assessment Protocol. Students will develop an assessment protocol
to serve as a guide when developing assessment plans. The content and
form of the assessment protocol are described on the assignment
page. The protocol will be worth a total of 100 points.
- Treatment Guidesheets. Students will develop guide sheets summarizing
treatment strategies for the various disorder areas. The content
and form of the guidesheets are described on the assignment
page.The guide sheets will be worth a total of 50 points.
- Case Presentations. Students will present to the class a case
study based on history information. The content and form of the presentation
are described on the assignment page.The
presentation will be worth a total of 50 points.
- Competencies. Students will demonstrate competence in the
following skill areas:
- Assessment
- Aphasia battery
- Motor speech assessment, including description of perceptual characteristics
- Clinical swallowing examination, including oral motor exam
- Observation and interpretation of videofluorographic swallow assessment
- Treatment
- Two swallowing maneuvers (Mendelsohn and Supraglottic Swallow)
The competencies will be graded pass/fail. Details about the competencies
are included on the assignment page.
Students demonstrating minimal competency will earn 50 points. Up to
an additional 10 points may be earned for exceptional work.
Extra Credit
Students may earn up to 20 extra points by completing extra credit projects
described on the extra credit page.
