COURSE
DESCRIPTION
Differential diagnosis and
management of the impairments, activity limitations, and participation
restrictions related to aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia. Special
consideration will be give to age-, gender-, and culture-related differences.

COURSE OUTCOMES
Students completing the course
will
- understand the anatomical
and neurological support system for aerodigestive function (ASH III-C)
- identify characteristics
of normal aerodigestive function with appreciation for diversity in
eating behaviors (ASHA III-C)
- identify and characterize
(ASHA III-D)
- pathophysiology and
impairments contributing to swallowing disabilities,
- activity limitations
in aerodigestive function, and
- participation restrictions
resulting from swallowing disorders
- understand the impact of
a variety of common neurological disorders on aerodigestive function
(ASHA III-D)
- demonstrate knowledge of
the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention
for people with dysphagia, including consideration of anatomical/physiological,
psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates
of the disorders (ASHA III-D).
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
General Expectations
According to the guidelines
set forth by the Communication Disorders Program, students should commit
10 hours per week for each 3 semester hour course. The following are my
expectations for the time commitments for the course:
- class meetings: 2.5 hours
per week
- reading: 1-3 hours per week
- studying and reviewing:
1-2 hours per week
- homework: 2-3 hours per
week
Specific Requirements
- Portfolio. Each student
will develop a portfolio of resources related to the management of swallowing
disorders. Details. 100 points.
- Competencies. Each
student will demonstrate competence in assessment and treatment skills.
Details. 50 points.
- Quizzes and Exams.
Three in-class quizzes will be administered (see course schedule below).
Each quiz will be worth 25 points. The comprehensive take-home exam
is worth 100 points.
Extra Credit
Students may earn up to 20
extra points by completing extra credit projects described on the extra
credit page .
