Syllabus: Part I
Summer 2004

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Differential diagnosis and management of the impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions related to aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia. Special consideration will be give to age-, gender-, and culture-related differences.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Students completing Part I of CD 5732 will achieve the following outcomes:

  1. knowledge of basic human swallowing processes, including their biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and cultural bases (ASHA IIIB)
  2. knowledge of the nature of swallowing disorders, including their etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and cultural correlates (ASHA IIIC)
  3. knowledge of the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with swallowing disorders, including consideration of anatomical/physiological, psychological, developmental, and cultural correlates of the disorders (ASHA IIID)
  4. knowledge of standards of ethical conduct governing provision of services to individuals with swallowing disorders (ASHA IIIE)
  5. knowledge of processes used in research and the integration of research principles into evidence-based practice in the management of swallowing disorders (ASHA IIIF)
  6. knowledge of contemporary professional issues related to the management of swallowing disorders (ASHA IIIG)
  7. skill in the administration of a basic clinical examination of swallowing function (ASHA IVG)
  8. skill in the interpretation of videofluorographic examinations of swallowing function (ASHA IVG)
  9. skill in the implementation of several treatment strategies addressing swallowing dysfunction (ASHA IVG)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

General Expectations

According to the guidelines set forth by the Communication Disorders Program, students should commit 18 hours per week for each 3 semester hour course during the 8 week summer session. The following are my expectations for the time commitments for the course:

  • class meetings: 5 hours per week
  • reading, studying, and reviewing: 4 hours per week
  • homework: 5 hours per week

Specific Requirements

  1. Portfolio. Each student will develop a portfolio of resources related to the management of swallowing disorders. Details. 100 points.
  2. Competencies. Each student will demonstrate competence in assessment and treatment skills. Details. 50 points.
  3. Quizzes and Exams. Three in-class quizzes will be administered (see course schedule below). Each quiz will be worth 25 points. The comprehensive take-home exam is worth 100 points.

Extra Credit

Students may earn up to 15 extra points by completing extra credit projects described on the extra credit page .
