COURSE
DESCRIPTION
Differential diagnosis and
management of the impairments, activity limitations, and participation
restrictions related to aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia. Special
consideration will be give to age-, gender-, and culture-related differences.

COURSE OUTCOMES
Students completing CD 5732
will achieve the following outcomes:
- knowledge of the principles
and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with
aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria and dysphagia, including consideration of anatomical/physiological,
psychological, developmental, and cultural correlates of the disorders
(ASHA IIID)
- knowledge of standards of
ethical conduct governing provision of services to individuals with
aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria and dysphagia (ASHA IIIE)
- knowledge of processes used
in research and the integration of research principles into evidence-based
practice in the management of aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria and dysphagia
(ASHA IIIF)
- knowledge of contemporary
professional issues related to the management of aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria and dysphagia (ASHA IIIG)
- skill in the administration
of a basic clinical examination of swallowing function (ASHA IVG)
- skill in the interpretation
of videofluorographic examinations of swallowing function (ASHA IVG)
- skill in the differential diagnosis of motor speech disorders (ASHA IVG)
- skill in the implementation
of several treatment strategies addressing swallowing dysfunction (ASHA
IVG)
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
General Expectations
According to the guidelines
set forth by the Communication Disorders Program, students should commit
10 hours per week for each 3 semester hour course. The following are my
expectations for the time commitments for the course:
- class meetings: 2.5 hours
per week
- reading, studying, and reviewing:
3 - 4 hours per week
- homework: 3 - 4 hours per
week
Specific Requirements
- Assessment Protocol. Each student
will develop a brief protocol for the assessment of neurogenic disorders. Details.
100 points.
- Standardized Skill Presentation. In small groups, students will present to the class information about a standardized assessment tool or treatment procedure related to neurogenic disorders. Details. 50 points.
- Assessment Report. Each student will develop an assessment report based on historical and diagnostic information provided. Details. 100 points.
- Competencies. Each
student will demonstrate competence in assessment and treatment skills.
Details. 50 points.
- Treatment Summary Sheet. In small groups, students will develop treatment summary sheets for the management of neurogenic communication disorders. Details. 100 points.
- Evidence-based Treatment Plans. Each student will develop an evidence-based treatment plan based on patient information provided. Details. 100 points.
Extra Credit
Students may earn up to 20
extra points by completing extra credit projects described on the extra
credit page .
