On this page are some examples of appropriate
and inappropriate dress for interviews and in practice. Before we show
pictures however, we thought we'd outline some standard dressing guidelines.
In Professional Issues in Speech Pathology & Audiology: Chapter 9
outlines appropriate attire:
To "project an image of professionalism and competence...tasteful,
well fitting, classic clothing; polished, comfortable shoes; conservative
accessories; and immaculate personal grooming"
Avoid "conspicuous, trendy colors, and patterns, gaudy jewelry,
heavy makeup, extremely high heeled shoes, or sandals, bare legs, short
skirts, and strong fragrances."
Additional guidelines we felt were left out of the above summary are
that a show of cleavage is inappropriate, as is midriff; necklines should
be conservative and tasteful, and that shirts should not be skin tight,
but more relaxed.
Below are images we picked out from catalogs and websites that illustrate
our points. A lab coat was included since clinical settings may require
wearing one. Additionally, more casual clothing may be appropriate depending
on the setting; in a preschool dress might be pants or jeans due to activity
level. Of course on a job interview dress should almost always be formal.
