This site was created for a panel titled "Experience and Action: Service-Learning Nuts and Bolts--A Discussion Circles Approach" at the 2002 National Communication Association Convention in New Orleans. Instead of bringing handouts (thanks to budget cuts), I created this site and handed out cards with this address. So if you're visiting this page, you're getting essentially everything that people saw at the convention, minus the conversation, but with additional links. Service Learning & Persuasion: Nuts & Bolts: information about how service learning can augment persuasion courses, including why and how I have incorporated service learning into my persuasion course, how service learning helps achieve certain goals for the course, challenges that it has created, and benefits
Project Details: a list of the various projects that have been completed in COM 3155 Theories and Practices of Persuasion at Appalachian State University, to help stimulate some ideas for your own projects
Groups and Online Course Systems: information about how online course systems can be used to better manage group projects
ACT Service Learning site: Appalachian and the Community Together serves as the "clearing house" for service learning at ASU. Without their tireless assistance, this course would be much more difficult to manage. On this site you'll also find many resources for service learning.
Dummy WebCT Site: here you can see what students see for the online portion of my course. You can log in as a student and check out the syllabus, the class schedule, detailed information about assignments, posting areas, group file zones, and more. When you get to this page, click on "Log in" and use the following information:
- WebCT ID: d_workshop1 (use any number from 1 through 10, this allows multiple people to log in)
- Password: d_workshop1 (use the same number that you used for the ID, so if you used "d_workshop8" as the ID, use "d_workshop8" for the password)
Once you're logged in, you'll see several different workshop areas. Click on the one titled "Service Learning and Persuasion," and you'll see what students see in my course. You won't be able to take any of the online quizzes, unfortunately. :-)
