Although the suggested packing list seems extensive, please pack light as the program will only pay for your first check-in bag weighing less than 50 pounds. For information on luggage size, weight, etc. please visit USAir luggage information, for prohibited items visit TSA's page, and for carry-ons visit 3-3-1 for Carry-Ons.

Suggested Packing List:

  1. Valid passport plus one photocopy of the photo page
  2. Hat (for sun protection) and sun glasses
  3. Sun block
  4. Personal clothing - lightweight business/casual clothing is most practical - long pants and long sleeves/sweater for evening - also include working clothes. You will get wet and it can get cool in the evenings. Also bring at least one ASU shirt (group photo)
  5. Bathing suit (2 recommended)
  6. Comfortable-sturdy shoes - Boots and other comfortable shoes (minimum)
  7. Towel
  8. Plastic bags to protect items from rain and for placing dirty clothes
  9. Body soap and shampoo
  10. Hand cleaner and baby wipes or wet-ones (antiseptic)
  11. Toiletries and sanitary supplies
  12. Bug repellant
  13. Extra pair of eyeglasses/contacts
  14. Fanny pack or day pack
  15. Flip-flops or sandals (with holding straps recommended) for showering and /or beach
  16. Flashlight and extra batteries
  17. Canteen or bottle for drinking water
  18. Snack food (such as granola bars) - you will not go hungry!
  19. Poncho or light raincoat and umbrella
  20. Personal medications
  21. Imodium AD and Pepto Bismol
  22. Journal, sketchbook, pens, markers, and/or pencils
  23. Costa Rica guidebook and map
  24. Camera with lots of memory
  25. Bandana
  26. Earplugs (you will be sharing rooms at night)
  27. Spending money for souvenirs, snacks and/or calling card ($100.00 - $150.00 recommended)
  28. A small gift for your homestay family in Costa Rica ($15.00 max)
  29. Donated items for the elementary school and students (pencils, toothbrushes, bandaids, balloons, books, etc.) Perhaps your church or community would like to donate items for this rural and economically needy school - 2nd bags are available for these.
  30. A great and flexible attitude

What not to Bring?

  1. Your favorite clothes
  2. Guns
  3. Expensive jewelry
  4. Ipod (music player) or video games that will distract you and disconnect you from the group
  5. Drugs
  6. A crummy attitude
