Point Group Tutorial - Instructions
JPEG Images: Many of these pages contain images of molecules
with a white background. These images generally depict some symmetry
element present in that molecule. Those images that have a colored
border are linked to animated .gif files. Clicking on these images
will bring up an animation of the depicted symmetry operation. You
need no special plug-in to view these animations, both Netscape and Explorer
support animated gif files. After viewing the animation, you can return
to the previous page by clicking the BACK button on your browser.
Chime Images: The images of molecules with a black background
are Chemscape Chime images. These are interactive models that require
the free Chime plug-in available from
MDL. This plug-in
is available for both Netscape and Explorer. These molecules can be
manipulated in a number of ways, a few of which are listed below.
-
Rotate - Molecules can be rotated by left-clicking on the molecule
and then dragging the mouse. This will enable you to view the molecule
as a 3D object from your choice of perspectives.
-
Resize - You can expand or shrink the molecule by holding down the
Shift key as you left-click on the image and drag the mouse up or down.
-
Rendering - You can change the rendering of the molecule from wire
frame, ball & stick, stick or space-filling models by right-clicking
on the molecule. This brings up a menu. Placing the cursor on
the display option brings up a sub-menu with the rendering options.
-
Lighting - By right clicking on the molecule and choosing the
options item, and then the specular item from the sub-menu,
you get a molecule rendered as though a bright light were shining on it.
While this is unnecessary for using the tutorial, the molecules are
much prettier this way! :-)
