Course Description:

The course is intended to introduce students to the field of instructional technology including its theoretical and practical components.  Students are introduced to traditional and emerging electronic communication systems and equipment, and consider the application such technology may have whether in education, business or industry.  Particular attention is given to the instructional design process with emphasis placed on the relationship between the inception of a program or technology and the actual instructional application and implementation of it.

The context of this cohort is the Elementary School, and we will attempt to connect the practical and conceptual components of the course to the needs of elementary school students as well as to the NC Standard Course of Study for grades k-6.

(*Note that not all readings will be posted at the start of the semester; the choice of readings will depend, in part, on the flow and needs of the class.)

Evaluation:

1. Technology Survey. (20%) East student will help develop a survey to be given to at least one teacher, one administrator, one parent and one student. Data will be analyzed and discussed in a short paper.

[Master's Standards:2.1; 4.1; 4.2;4.4; 5.1; 5.4; 5.5]

2. PowerPoint Presentation. (20%) Each student will develop a short instructional PowerPoint for use in the classroom. Emphasis will be on good visuals (no clip art!), a solid instructional design, and the appropriate use of the tool. (A short written reflection on this work will also be required.)

[Master's Standards: 1.1; 1.3; 1.4; 1.5; 1.6; 1.7; 1.8; 2.2; 2.3; 2.4; 2.5; 4.3]

3. Motion Picture Study Guide (20%) Each student or small group of students will develop a motion picture study guide for a film appropriate for use with children. These will be based on the Australian Teachers of Media study guide format.

[Master's Standards: 1.1; 1.3; 1.4; 1.5; 1.6; 1.7; 1.8; 2.2; 2.3; 2.4; 2.5; 4.3]

4. Video Production Project. (10%) Each group of students will storyboard and create a short, creative videotape to be linked to a piece of children's literature. We will do this in class. (A short written reflection on this work will also be required.)

[Master's Standards: 1.1; 1.4; 1.6; 1.7; 1.8; 2.2; 2.3; 2.4; 2.5]

5. Product of Learning. (10%) Each student will develop a template for the Product of Learning Portfolio (which is due, in its final form, at the end of the Masters program). At the end of this course, the portfolio will include multimedia materials and rationales that reflect work done this semester and will be saved to serve storehouse for materials developed throughout the program.

[Master's Standards:3.1; 3.2].

6. Class Participation, Timeliness of Work, and Attendance. (20%) This class is structured around a Community of Practice model of learning. Preparation for class is demonstrated through your active participation in classroom discussions and other activities. You will be asked to submit a short response to each reading (4 points you agree or disagree with, 2 questions, 2 examples), to give feedback to one another about projects, and to participate in on-line discussions. Please tell me if you know in advance that you are going to miss a class so I can fill you in on what you need to do. Missing class without contacting me, or missing class frequently (even if you let me know) will lower your grade up to one letter grade per class missed; being late will count as half an absence.

A note on grades: All submissions are considered works-in-progress. Any project may be resubmitted before the end of the semester for an improved grade.
