Course Description:

This 3 hour graduate class will provide participants with the conceptual and practical skills to create digital media for use in K-12 classrooms. In addition, we will model and discuss how students at a variety of levels can produce media materials of their own. Emphasis will be on using technology as a means of expression and on developing activities that further the aims of student-centered, constructivist classrooms.

COURSE CONTENT:
In this course, we will develop activities that integrate media production into a variety of curricular areas including Language Arts, Mathematics, History, Visual Arts and Science. We will explore:
• digital photography and scanning,
• image manipulation in Photoshop,
• creative approaches to PowerPoint,
• web page design and publication,
• video production,
• and digital video editing.

Participants will create high quality interactive sound/slide shows, web pages, video shorts, animations, and approaches to getting students to do their own production. All the work in this class will be published on-line for other teachers to use.

Closing discussions

Note: Several of these projects overlap; we will discuss how the requirements for one project can be woven into another. [E.g. You may capture video clips for project #4 (Other Video Techniques) and fold them into project #5 (Creative Use of Powerpoint) and simply turn in one project to meet both requirements.] However, since this is a 3 hour class, it may be difficult to complete all the assignments during the one week of classes. I will accept work through the end of the summer.

Evaluation:

Production Projects (75%)

Each of the first 5 projects will be graded on a three point scale; the grade on project #6 will be tripled, and the grade on project #7 will be doubled, so you will receive a maximum of 30 points total for your projects.  I will use the following criteria as I assess your work.

Three points if your project: Two points if your project: One point if your project:
Your total points for production assignments will determine your grade for this component of the course:
  25-30 points = A
23-24 points = A-
21-22 points = B+
19-20 points = B
17-18 points = B-
15-16 points = C+
13-14 points = C
11-12 points = C-
9-10 points = D+
7-8 points = D
5-6 points = D-
<5 points = F

Class preparation, participation and attendance. (25%) The discussions and interactions that take place in the classroom, lab are an important part of this course.  Since there are a number of activities that we will do as a class that will be difficult to make up if you are absent, it is important that you come to class every day and stay until the end of the day. Please tell me if you know in advance that you are going to miss class time so I can fill you in on what you need to do. Missing class without contacting me, or missing class frequently (even if you let me know) will affect your grade.
