Introduction to Theatrical Design
THR 2216
Fundamental Projects
The six projects described below are intended to give students the fundamentals
needed to successfully complete the final project. It is extremely important
that students attend all classes so that they do not fall behind on these
projects!
NO PROJECT WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 5:00pm ON THE DAY THAT IT IS DUE!!!
Design Concept
The artistic choices made when designing for the theatre should be
based upon a design concept. This term is defined as a coherent, unified
approach to the visual elements of a theatrical production that reinforces
and communicates a specific interpretation of the play.
PROJECT
I. Design Foundations.
Part A. Response to the play. Due on 8/24.
One or two typewritten (12 point, double-spaced) paragraphs which describe the ideas, images, and emotions evoked in you when
reading the play. Also required is an 11" x 17" collage that depicts your initial emotions regarding the play.
Part B. Developed Interpretation. Due on 8/31
Required: A typewritten presentation that includes the following:1. Specific elements from the play that generated your initial response. Look for adjectives and other key words; images described by
the playwright; character responses to crisis-particularly the climax.2. Additional responses to the play. Research any comments by the playwright or informed critics. Include brief summaries or
quotations of these responses.3. Synthesize the information from 1 and 2 to make a statement that expresses your interpretation of the playwright's intended message
to audiences.
3. Scenic and prop plot.
PROJECT II. Costume sketches with supporting material in Design
Notebook.
Required: Pencil sketches of two assigned characters. Due on 9/26
Each sketch must be accompanied by a brief typewritten explanation of the
design choices. Artistic choices should be supported by
significant research in the design notebook.
PROJECT III. Swatched, watercolored costume renderings. Due on 10/10
Required: Sketches from Project II rendered and swatched with fabric choices.
1. Each rendering must be accompanied by a brief typewritten explanation of the design choices, with an emphasis on color.
2. Include comments explaining any shortcomings in desired painting effects or inexact swatches.
PROJECT IV. Theatrical Floor Plan. Due on 10/31
Required: A 1/4" scale floor plan that accommodates the requirements of
the script.
A drawing of an empty theatre space will be provided. The finished plate must be as neat and precise as possible.
PROJECT V. Design Elevations with supporting materials in Design
Notebook. Due on 11/7
Required:
1/4" design elevations based on the floor plan provided in Project IV.
Drawings must be properly dimensioned and as neat and precise as possible.
Also, artistic choices should be supported by significant research in the
Design Notebook.
PROJECT VI. White Model. Due on 11/9
Required:
A 1/4"scale 3-dimensional representation of the set design which combines
the choices and work generated in Projects IV and
V and
the Design Notebook.
DESIGN
NOTEBOOK
To encourage the process of developing a valid design concept, students
are required to document such process in a design notebook.
This notebook should include:
