ENG4820 Final Examination Review

These review notes present a set of terms with comments that cover basic concepts and approaches in the second half of our course. Consulting this listing should not replace reading or class discussion; however, it can provide helpful emphasis, ordering, and clarification in examination review. The list also tries to provide some cross-referencing of ideas by links and by reference to our reading, both required and supplementary. Building associations by hypertext links is a pedagogical strategy of these webpages so that working with them interactively on the Internet is important. Don't just print out the webpages.

Rereading or reading for the first time whole works is impossible at this point in your review. Study these review notes and your own class notes, and glance at specific sections you've marked in our texts. Parenthetical references below are to page number and line number in our course texts. Also look at the topics listed for each class on the course assignment sheet. Don't get overwhelmed: we've studied a lot, but you know a lot. Think about connections of ideas and texts. Use your own study-group learning community as a heartening and organizing unit.

Examination Format

The final examination will include three kinds of questions. Short answer questions will be multiple choice and mainly cover terms listed in these course notes and basic plot, character, and thematic details from our literary works. Identification/significance discussion questions present significant quotations from works discussed in class. You will write a paragraph or two identifying the work, its author, the position of the quotation in the work, and the special considerations the quotation brings up about the work and medieval literature. An essay question develops an overview of some significant topic, theme, or formal feature that connects our study of medieval literature.
