LYLE F. SCHOENFELDT, Ph.D.
Professor and Chairperson
Dr. Schoenfeldt is professor and chairperson, Department of Management, Appalachian State University. Prior to joining Appalachian State University in 1996, Dr. Schoenfeldt was the Marie B. Oth Professor of Business, Texas A&M University (1981-1996).
Dr. Schoenfeldt's teaching and research interests include human resources, particularly strategic human resource management, the identification of management talent, international business, and international comparative human resources. Dr. Schoenfeldt has led six study abroad courses to Japan and China.
Prior to joining Texas A&M in 1981, Dr. Schoenfeldt was Director of Early Identification of Management Talent (EIMT) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. The EIMT research was featured in Business Week and other national media.
Dr. Schoenfeldt has had more than 40 publication in his field. I n addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Schoenfeldt has had considerable consulting experience with Colt Industries, Olin Corporation, Texaco, PPG Industries, Pitney Bowes, Aramco, Airco, Ashland Oil, Southwestern Bell Telephone, Levi Strauss, Cooper Industries, StarEnterprise, and many other companies. He also is author of a popular text on human resource management, published by Houghton Mifflin and now in its fourth edition.
Among his honors, Dr. Schoenfeldt won the Cattell Award of the Division of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, American Psychological Association (APA), for his ideas on prediction of managerial success. Dr. Schoenfeldt is also a Fellow in the Society of Industrial Psychology of the APA.
In addition to his teaching and research, Lyle and his wife own the historic country inn and restaurant, The Mast Farm Inn, in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. The Mast farm dates from the late 1700s with the first house of what is now The Mast Farm Inn build about 1810.
